hello,
my 1971 Evinrude 85HP Coil has been changed out to one that uses a conventional type clip on coil wire to coil terminal. currently, it works fine.
i note that it has a black wire coming off it, as well as, a blue wire that goes to terminal #5 per the oe service manual.
i wish to change this coil to a modern hi-rise coil. since a coil only puts out what it needs to fire the plug and since this is 1971 technology, i am thinking this is a change that will work fine. i also plan to install some high performance plug wires that will fit to my distributor ok and so want a coil that can rise to full discharge potential.
i am thinking that the small, kodak film can sized one may not reach full capacity potential each time it fires plug x 4 due to oil/gas environment, etc.
from hands-on experience, these coils have shown to improve driveability in automotive useage, no other changes. stock coils are ok, but dont reach full potentional say... once above 2,000 rpms or so...

any thots? anyone changed to higher effieciency coils, etc?
i am interested in changing my entire ignition to an enhanced, hot set up... plugs, plug wires, coil, box... seems simple to do, since dist is already dual points and many boxes wire directly to distributor...
i was looking at my system set up last nite... seems dist, coil, amp, plugs etc all stand alone. work together but not wired into clipper, etc...
any thots and or comments would be appreciated.
