Hi all,

My evinrude got wet. It ran fine before but it has been 4 days and I still cannot get spark now. Any info on how to remove the flywheel? I can see that the plug wires route under there. I took the top nut off but the flywheel won't budge.

Hopefully you aren't saying that the engine was under water. If so, remove the spark plugs, pour some oil into the carburetor throat and pull the engine over slowly until some oil flows out the spark plug holes. The internal parts of that engine, if submerged, start to rust as soon as the engine is exposed to air.

Flywheel removal.... requires a three hole puller whereas three bolts screw into the threaded holes in the top of the flywheel surrounding the crankshaft.

Another method is to have the flywheel nut flush with the top of the crankshaft, apply a bit of upward pressure under the flywheel with a large screwdriver or some tool of your choosing, then hit the top of the crankshaft and nut squarely with a large hammer. NOTE! This must be done carefully and with precision so as not to damage the threads of the crankshaft..... hitting that nut at an angle could be (and usually is) a expensive mistake.

Thanks to both of you. I did get oil in it right away but never could get spark. I will pull the flywheel with the three bolts and see what it looks like in there.

Flywheel came off easy. Every thing is nice and dry (it did not get submerged, just had waves crashing over it for a while). Any hints? I have gas and air, but those coils don'/t seem to fire.

Clean the points with either lacquer thinner or acetone. You might need to clean them slightly with #400 or #600 wet or dry sandpaper first. Set them as follows.

(Point Setting Of Magneto Models)
(J. Reeves)

Set the points as follows. Have the flywheel key aligned with the fiber rubber portion of the ignition points. Adjust the gap so that a .020 gauge will pass thru but a .022 will not. Should there be any question of the points being dirty (touching the contact with your finger would cause them to be dirty), clean them with a small brush and acetone or lacquer thinner.

Blow the magneto out with pressurized air.

NOTE: Should the operating cam have a small portion on it with the word "SET" imprinted, align this portion with the fiber rubbing portion instead of the flywheel key.
