I am looking to buy a used Johnson motor. I came across the following for sale with the following disclosure.

$150
1971 Johnson 100

Motor runs and shifts
stalls at idle
compression 120-120-120-120
transmission problem
cooling system: water does not curculate

What do you all think. Any thoughts on any of these details?

Is water not circulating indicative of a bad water pump? Is a lower unit expensive or difficult to rebuild? How's the compression sound?

Thanks!:)

DO it! Even if it needs work there's lots of shops and boat yards that will pay you a lot more for it then 150. It's a win win. Buy it cheap and sell it or buy it fix it ENJOY it!!!!!

Yeah, It has good compression.
Everything else may be broken.

You could be looking at quite a bit of cash to get it running reliably.

The distributor is 250 bucks
The stator is dealer direct
The amplifier/clipper is 225 bucks
and the list goes on......

If you could test it and confirm that there is good strong spark on all 4 cylinders, then it's a maybe......

Okay I was able to check the spark and it is good on all four cylinders. :)

I saw it run but it does stall at idle. Any suggestions, should I pull the trigger on this purchase? Would you?

Noooo. It has a hydro-electric gearcase, and it is apparently broken.
I'd pass.....

How can I find out if it is the gearcase? I did a seach here for "hyrdo electric gearcase" but came up empty.

Any other thoughts?

I see where you state "runs and shifts". I do not see any reference that the gearcase is not functioning. If this motor has spark and runs and shifts you have a running motor that may need an impeller, carb cleaning and link/sync done. Thats it! Grab it and run before they change their mind.

I see "Transmission Problem" on a hydro electric and run away....what else would that mean ??

Motor runs and shifts
stalls at idle
compression 120-120-120-120
transmission problem
cooling system: water does not curculate

OK after reading the original post again I see he contradicts himself. I own a 1970 60HP electric shift motor with no problems. I do however witness the scaremongering on this board about owning one and it is totally prejudice based on nothing but cost of parts and availability of parts which in a small percentage fail. If this motor starts and shifts fine how could it have transmission problems? This guy is obviously not researching this motor properly.
On a foot note after paying 150 for this motor one could part it out for probably 4 times that but that's just the business side of me showing.
Oh yeah forgot to mention I just bought a 1973 115HP Evinrude for $75 without laying eyes on it. Don't know where that's going but I know I will have more than $75 in my pocket at the end!
