Does this motor have electronic ignition or (stinking) points?

What cubic inch is it, and roughly what does it weigh?

Finally, is this motor one of a series with the same cubic inches?

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff, Welcome to the forum

Johnson didn't make an 18 hp motor in 1971, so if you can provide a model #, it should be on the transom monting bracket.

Then we can tell you what motor you have and you'll know what manual to buy for it :p

Again Welcome,
Mike :D

The 15, 18, 20, 25 were the same cubic inch untill 1978, as I recall, about 22 cubic inch, Yes they would have points, and weigh about 80 lbs.

Yup. :) The 22.0 outboards were made from '57-, and were a very popular engine.
The original ignition coils were often a problem, but if they've been replaced recently they'll be fine forever. They seem to suffer more clutch dog problems than other outboards. But as long as you shift briskly that won't be a problem either.

Check the transom bracket for a model number. That will confirm the year & hp.
