1971 johnson 50hp stays in forward

1971 50ESL71S starts and runs, have tried to replace f/r switch with a toggle, still stays in forward, Engine did not run for 9 years, worked on it and tuned, ran in test barrel, one time it ran in neutral at start. Then every time it has ran in forward.

If you want you might try the site search engine on this page and look for "electric shift" or something similar.<br /><br />You could try draining the lower unit and refilling it with 50:1 fuel mix for a try in the barrel to try to un-gum the mechanism. After that you will want to refill the lower unit with the special oil needed for those type lower units.
