1971 Johnson 60 HP with Electric Shift

I have a 71 Johnson 60 HP with Electric Shift. Just had the carbs rebuilt. My problem is that It works in reverse and Neutral but when I shift into Forward while in the water It will not go forward, when I put the gas to it, it just rev's the motor wide open but goes now where, seems to work just fine out of the water.

I had an omc i/o that had the same prob. It turned out that someone had spliced the shift wire below the water line and it was shorting to ground (ocean). There are many other things it could be those are complex units! If you could get your hands on a manual they describe in detail how to test the coils that make it shift. A manual is a must if you want to get anywhere with this motor. Good luck !
