Ok I ran the motor this past weekend and on the topend it doesnt perform well at all. It idles fine, but when ran open, it bogs down and rpms just sound like they arent as high as they need to be. I am sure it is a carb problem. I am going to run some sea foam through the gas tank as well as the carb chamber and see what happens. Otherwise, I want to get a carb kit. I was just wondering if these kits are very hard to install. I do have a service manual which shows assembling the carb and disassembling, but doesnt actually show the installation of a kit.

is there any other adjustments I might need to mess with other than the low setting that comes out as a knob on the motor?

thanks

The dial is lean/rich adjustment for idle. If it idles OK, leave it for now and get to the high speed jet which lies horizontally at the bottom of the float bowl, just behind the drain plug. OEM carburetor kits are reasonable at your local dealer and come with the float which should be replaced.

To remove the carburetor you need to disconnect the hose and linkage and then remove the 5 screws. Turn the tiller handle to move the throttle cam out of the way to reach the screw in back.

Re: 1971 johnson 9.5 carb problems

You can follow Mr. Reeves general instructions here: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=167352

However, the 9.5 setting will sometimes be in the area of one turn out and the factory service manual says initial 3/4 turn out for the 9.5HP motors. It is a good idea to rebuild the carburetor first since the needle must be removed to take the carburetor off the engine.

The high speed jet is fixed and does not require adjustment, just a thorough cleaning.

I am looking at my manual and it is showing me the fixed jet, now to take a screw out do I have to have a special tool and also I cant quite tell where its showing its location. Where is that thing.

Basically do I just take a that little plug thing out and clean it?
I have some sea foam...is that a good cleaner for this type application?

thanks for your help.

Re: 1971 johnson 9.5 carb problems

I have two 1972 9.5's One John and one Rude. I found when I rebuild the carbs that the floats on both of them were shot. They are made out of cork and varnarsh. I guess after 30+ years the gas eats the varnarsh and the floats got gas soaked. As far as the fixed jet. What I did was used a twisty tie wire and ran it through real good, using WD-40 as a cleaner. Then blew it out real good with a can of compressed air. Just like you would use on your key board. I hope this helps.
