Ok, when I bought my 9.5 earlier this month used, it had a worn out starter pinion (the plastic sleeve with gears). I am having a bit of a problem after replacing this part. Here are the steps i took.

1. slid new pinion over recoil shaft
2. tied rope to recoil and pulled rope all the way out
3. twisted the top of the spring (the flat screw) counter clockwise until tight
4. then inserted the pin so it would catch when i let go, and it did and recoiled all the string.

everything seems fine and dandy, but im still encountering a problem.

the pinion doesnt always want to raise up when pulling the string and catch the gears. Sometimes it will and sometimes it just spins without raising. it seems like if i give it hard small jerks, it will catch better, but for some reason the pin doesnt want to travel up the guide always and raise the pinion up to the flywheel.

do you guys that have experience with this see that i did something wrong, or could possibly my string be too thick. Im stumped, but will appreciate any help possible.

thanks

Don't know if it might be part of the problem but the pinion and shaft have to be absolutely dry and clean and the roll pin should not cause friction.

Subject to OMC Service Bulletin 1276, the number of turns for the spring tightening was reduced to 18 from 20-1/2 turns to prevent breaking the spring.

thanks, I can disassemble it and clean it. Now is the pin supposed to roll up and down the guides? or just sit in there? that might be the problem, because the one I have doesnt roll, but it is a generic. Not an OEM. I got it at NAPA. I will make some adjustments this evening and see what happens.

thanks much!

They just call them roll pins because they are made from flat metal that is rolled over.

The pin holds the pinion and guides it as it moves up and down. It should be tight enough that the pin stays in place and does not slide out.

hey man th anks...another little problem. when the cord rewinds it does totally fine winding back on the threaded assembly except for the very bottom instead of staying on the bottom channel, it just overlaps on the already rolled string. take mind the guy gave me a mercury string rope and not the original Johnson. is it possible the string is too thick?

thanks again

I use #5 (5/32) lawn mower rope. The OMC/BRP rope is 5/32 PN 772577.

Use just enough on the spool to fill the channels, then tie it off in the handle. The specs say 66-3/4" or 65-1/4", but that is too much.

At 26 cents a foot, get the BRP rope if the dealer has it.
