Hello I have a 1971 Johnson 100hp
I resently went through the lower unit and replaced the clutchdog in it because when I bought the boat it was slipping in foward but not in reverse. After I tore it apart and seen that the clutchdog was the problem I replaced it.The foward gear showed a little wear so I built it back up and and used a die grinder to smooth it back out,and I made sure that the corners were good and square.Anyways to make a long story short I put it all back together went to the lake and it would engage good while idleing but throttled up it woulg grab and slip, grab and slip over and over.I was wondering if the spring that holds the clutchdog in foward gear might be weak. Any help would be great. Thanks Delbert

I would say nice try. Replace the gear and hope you didn't screw up the new dog. The spring is to put it into gear, not hold it there. The dog and gear edges have to be dang near perfect. There is a lot of torque on that thing.

There are likely aftermarket gears available.

OK, ya ready for this?
I have a 40hp 1962 Johnson electric shift.
Just yesterday I cleaned my carb and put back in and then it would slip out of gear while I was testing my carb. work. I thought, you gotta be kiddin me. All I wanted to do was a little main. and now the lower units screwed up. What did I do? I'll tell you what I did, I forgot to reconnect the ground wire at the starter motor bracket which activates the forward gear. No ground, no forward. It was barely touching a bolt and kinda staying in gear until I floored it and then it would move a little and would slip out of gear. Connected wire, stays in gear.
