1971 Merc 1350 Powerhead Water

Well as I can guess this is not a good sign. I have a high pressure water leak coming from the left side which Im guessing covers my exhaust valves on the powerhead. I can't see a good exploded view of it on seloconline.com. So I am guessing that the right side (viewing from rear) is the reed intake valves. So its is the left bottom side that I have the leakm viewing from the rear.<br /><br />Anyway if Laddies(Bob) or Clam can give me a diagnosis would be greatly appreciated. This isn't comming from the head gasket but instead is leaking between the side cover and the head itself.<br /><br />Thanks -Mike

Mike thats the exhaust cover thats leaking try to repair it with some kind of sealant or epoxy, trying to remome the bolts is flirting with disaster thet snap off very easily in fresh water, I don't have a clue how you would get them out of a salt water engine. ( bet you never thought you would hear me say gober it up---Bob

I agree with Laddie, a leak around the exhaust plate. You'll have to get the thing really REALLY dry and try to goop it up with some JB-weld<br /><br />As a note - that think you called a head is just another water cover. And the reed valves are wrapped around the crank. The side covers cover the ports.<br /><br />-W

Thanks fellas Im really glad to hear that it isn't a major problem or indicator of something else.<br /><br />Should I be concerned if it doesn't stop leaking entirely?<br /><br />Also just to note I am going to put it in the water soon and run the Power Tune through it. Hopefully all will go well. thanks -Mike

Try to slow it up as **much** as you can, the more it leaks, the worse it will get via "erosion"<br /><br />-W

I kept wondering why the water pressure would be so strong here at the exhaust manifold. So I was taking a look and found the diagram of it. http://opk.gotdns.org/cooldia.jpg <br /><br />Seems a little weird to me but now I can certainly understand why it leaked there first. Can you tell me if the 1350 has thermostats though? I didn't think it did.

No thermostat on that engine, they us the exhaust heat ot temper the water before it goes to the block
