Hi guys.
Need help: How do you set up the crankshaft hub, (Which has (8) threaded holes in it.) to the flywheel.
Here is what I have done:
1. Removed 8 bolts from hub and removed hand crank bracket.
2. Positioned the #1 (Top) piston to TDC.
3. Rotated the flywheel so that the 2 dots (Timing mark)appears in the viewing window.
4. Re-assembled the 8 bolts locking the hub to the flywheel with the hand crank bracket
Problem is that when I check timing with a timing light, I can't get the timing mark (2 dots) to appear in the viewing window. Is this because I am cranking engine by hand?
Changing the position of the trigger switch on the side does not help bring it into the window either.
Any help will be appreciated. There is nothing in the books I have on how to set up the hub with the flywheel and the position of the piston and the timing marks.
Question: How do you static time an engine before you attempt to run it under power.
Thanks,
Roger2

Re: 1971 Merc 400 flywheel troubles.

1971 had distrubutor ignition,so it's easy to set by lining-up the rotor with number one on the mark on the flywheel, using the idle spec in the book as the mark to set it at what the book calls for,(think it's the two dots),being careful to only use the idle adjustment for same (idle will be the same as static AFA linkage is concerned)..This is adjustment would be the distributor positioning. This way, the tracking of the throttle timing advance linkage will be dead-on (povided you haven't changed it). surely, the mark on the flywheel need only be off by one bolt, and the engine simply will not run,as it is too far off time.
I don't need to tell you this now, but for others who may be in need of removing the flywheel, changing the timing linkage adjustments--- A small can of enamel (fingernail polish,or Testors model paint and a Q-tip) to mark everything first, will save you much grief durring re-assembly.

Re: 1971 Merc 400 flywheel troubles.

Hello again:
Guess I left out the most important Item.---I have a model 400. Ignition is referred to as a Breakerless Ignition. It has a stator coil, trigger and coil. It does not have a distributor.
Roger2
