1971 Merc 50 HP questions.

Does this motor require it to be in a tank to be tested (running) or can a person use the muffs?

Am new to the Mercs so may be asking a lot of questionws.

Ok, like I said many questions. I set it up in a tank and started checking things out. When I go into reverse and push handle back the motor revs up like it should. When I move the shift lever into forward it shifts fine and then pushing it farther forward the motor does not rev up. After pushing hard forward it will finally start reving.

Any suggestions?

Thats the way those old boxes worked. Lots of forward before things happened. It fine
