I have a 1971 Merc 165 Type I drive. I am seeing listings for 1974 and up Mercruiser Type I drives. Will this bearing still work on my 1971 drive?

Ayuh,... To the Best of my knowledge, they're All the Same, up until they dropped the grease-ability recently...
Yes, it should fit...

Re: 1971 Merc Type 1 gimbal bearing

depends,
somewhere along that time frame merc used a shim and a retaining ring to install and retain the gimbal bearing, the later stuff used a carrier with a tolerance ring.
the two cant really be interchanged.
can ya post a transom seriel number so the actual design can be looked at?
the shim and retaining ring bearing was a serious mo fo to replace.
and I think its NLA.
I may have the bearing but I doubt I have the shim strips anymore.

Rod, once the snap ring, shim stock, plastic carrier and bearing are removed the later type of gimbal bearing with the tolerance ring fits just fine. You should install it with the slots aft to be able to remove just the bearing to grease it.(if you have the greaseable one).If the Merc factory sealed one is used , just install it.
