I have a 1971 40 HP Mercury outboard. It idle ok when first stared but either almost stalls or stalls when throttle is put down in order to put in gear. Also sometimes stalls when going very slowly (i.e. approaching dock). Is this a carb cleaning issue? I am fairly new to boating. Is is easy to clean the carb out? Should I try to adjust the idle screw first? I ordered the shop manual for the motor but have not received it yet. Thanks.

Sounds like time to reabuild the carbs. Its a pretty easy job. Clean thoroughly and reassemble with new gaskets, needle and seat. While your at it rebuild the fuel pump. Another easy job.

Thanks. What it the best manual for that? I ordered the shop manual. Should I also order the Seloc manual? Are there any instructions on the Carb and fuel pump rebuild online? Thanks again!
