I have a 1971 OMC GM i-4 120 HP, but i am unsure of the model of the drive. my problem is the tilt won't work. It worked one day and not the next. I put in a new tilt motor and replaced a few wires, the solenoids click properly whan the switch is activated, and i have drawn a blank. I am starting to think that the tilt motor is not grounding properly even though it is a two wire motor that should have an internal ground. Any help and or ideas?

If the motor won't run either up or down when acting up, it's a problem with the motor if it will run one way and not the other it's the solinoid

grease the pivot bearings for the outdrive - take the clutch cover off and drain all the watery muck out - clean it and pack with grease - add 1 more shim to the cover - it's not a gasket

New tilt motor... check. All wires checked for bad spots... check. Solenoids clicking... check. Clutch cleaned out and refilled with manufacturer suggested oil... check. I even pulled the motor back off to see if it was operating when the switch was thrown, it wasn't. Any other ideas?

Sounds like it is time to trace the electricity from point to point and see where the problem is.

It is not unheard of to get a new BAD motor though.

Good luck!

A solinoid that clicks really tells you nothing only it's actuated not if voltage is going through it, that must be checked with a voltmeter or by bypassing it

grease the pivot bearings for the outdrive - add 1 more shim to the cover

check and check some more

With the quadrant gear off try to lift the drive - how hard is it? Slam it down and try to lift again? sticking in the down position?

Re: 1971 OMC sterndrive tilt not working

out drive is not stuck, slides smooth as silk. pulled clutch pack apart, out back together, and filled with oil. checked and cleaned every elec. connection on engine, and presto tilt drive motor turned on in down direction for about one second... then nothing again. going to get new solenoids right now and put on when it quits raining. i have also replaced half dozen or so wires in various spots on engine. if these solenoids don't work, it may be in what my Clymer OMC manual calls the "Yellow (Wire/cable?) Connector." There are two on this engine one is black the other is yellow. They both have multiple wires (4 or more) seemingly running right through them. Any ideas on what these are and where i can buy them? I have done some basic google searches that have turned up empty.

Just had same thing happening with mine. It's a $23 solenoid.
