I have a 72 100 hp evinrude model 100293R. Been in storage 13 years. Have read many forum items to help me get the motor going. Man what a help. My problem now is shifting into gear. No problem with forward, but nuetrol and reverse, thats another story. Went back to the forum. Have checked green and blue wires to lower unit sol. Ohm reading good. Have checked out selector switch. Works good. With key on have 12 volts to green and blue wires at selector switch and wires to lower unit. Start motor nothing but forward. Removed selector switch and cleaned all connection. Even cleaned the rubber knife connector. Check ohm reading to sol. and for 12 volts. All ok. Start motor neutrol and reverse worked. I cycled the selector switch about four times being careful to wait before shifting into nuetrol, reverse or forward. Thats when it defulted to forward and would not shift to neutrol or revese. Turn motor off. Checked ohm and voltage. All ok. Even hooked up the battery to the battery charger thinking at low rpm battery could be low. What to do next. Remove the lower unit and check for bad wires or sol. Have the manual, that only makes me ask many more questions. One at a time. I know I have been long winded but, I'm in a pickle  . Well thats my story and I'm sticking to it. Thanks for any help. Driveline

never say you are in a pickle, youll be in for a lot of gherkin around ...<br /><br />one thing about those motors is you need a blazing hot battery to make em run right, very voltage sensitive from what I hear (71 125 johnny here, I read all posts about any JohnnyRude of this size and vintage)<br /><br />In their wisdom, forward was the default setting<br /><br />Their folly was taking something simple and complicating the hell out of it, but if you are a Star Trek fan, remember what Bones (McCoy) had to say about engineers, "they LOVE to change things"<br /><br />(My guess is that people were slow shifting the motors and tearing the clutch dogs up, they were trying to take "human error" out of the equation, manuals need to be "snapped" into gear)<br /><br />good luck, keep posting!

Take and disconnect then jump the shift wires at the knife connectors when its not working. This will illiminate the switch.<br /><br />If the problem persists, you will have to remove the leg and open it up. Sol's might need replacing.<br /><br />TMD

Drain the oil from the L/U and refill with fresh and see what happens. I have even filled them with gasoline to flush them out.

Thanks for the quick replies mates. I did drain the old oil out and replaced with new electric shift oil. But after starting the motor, I did not top off the oil. May be low on oil?<br /><br />I did not think to by-pass the switch at the connector. Will give it a try.<br /><br />Have a new large marine battery. But will keep the charger on it, just to make sure it hot.<br /><br />Well keep you posted on the turn out. If it is the sol. Where do I get them? At the dealer or is there a better place?
