How's it going out there in this sideways world People.... Appreciate any info I can get.
Picked up a 72 Sea King 20hp short shaft tiller for $30, looks like new, I took it to the local shop just to see what the input was..... After they told Me it didn't look broke in if ran at all but were ready to sell Me a new 4 stroke. The orig rope was void of any dirt or grease, original spark plugs were clean and still on there as well as no damage to the prop. As soon as I got it home I broke the pinion gear, the plastic was brittle but I'll be damned if I didn't rewind the return spring backwards, replaced that, fuel pump quit working, replaced it then played with the carb. I mixed some Royal Purple 2 stroke premix at 32:1 for the first 10 gal then leaned it to 50:1 and it runs like a raped ape. It pushes My 14' aluminum flatbottom at a nice little click that I clocked by Myself, 4 gal gas, battery and trolling motor at 26.5 no current. My boats kinda narrow (like taking the water heater closet door fishing) and can be kinda sketchy if there's a quick movement but We've gotten pretty good at it, some Buddies better than others. I put a casting deck up front and elevated swivel seats and it seems to work just fine for what I do, so herein lies the problem... I drained the lower and it looked like I was gonna feel a cup with a vanilla shake.... To be honest I refilled with new You guessed Royal Purple 90 wt gear oil and ran it the next morning for 2-3 hrs but now it's time to fix it. I'd rather not hear parts are unavailable because it's a great motor that seems fast for what it is.... always starts and it looks cool with "Wards" Sea King on the cowl especially when it goes past My Buddies 18hp Evinrude without breathing hard so I'm desperately seeking some parts to seal it up, I've even got a factory techs service manual with the unanswered test in the back that says You're of Wards standards now that You've successfully answered the questions. I don't believe I've actually reached that plateau but with God's good grace and the smell of fresh bass on My hands someday I too will be worthy but for now ask the questions.... Getting to brass tacks can someone point Me in the right direction... Please

Welcome to the iboats.com forum. IMHO, this is the best resource available to recreational boaters. I am not certain which manufacturer built that great old motor but one of the gurus should be able to find you a parts source or two. I'll do some research and see what I can find. Good luck!

EDIT: Looks like it was made by Chrysler and these folks claim to have SOME parts:

It's a Chrysler. Some stuff can be had. I would forgo the purple dye and use marine TCW3 oil and marine gear oil as well. TCW3 is made from a different oil base and marine gear oil has emulsifiers for situations like a leaky lower unit
