Could be the coil but check clean and adjust the points
first. If coils show cracks or deterioration replace the coils. This will require a universal puller. You can get a cheap one at harbor freight. After 34 years it wouldn't hurt to replace plug wires as well.Use solid core wires.

Re: 1972 25hp Coils

Jethro,

First the bad news.......

You've been posting about your motor for some time now and apparently your still having problems. Creating multiple posts regarding the same motor makes it very hard to follow your progress in resolving the problem. Having to search back to previous posts to see what solutions were suggested, and what you did to fix the problem, is tedious. Repeated posts describing the same problem and hoping for different answers is just chasing your tail. By staying with ONE post, other guys here at iboats, can read the details of the problem and fixes that you apply. Together, we can work through the issues and get you back on the water as soon as possible. When you're given possible solutions, perform the work and post back to the same thread. The guys are monitoring your progress and want to help you as much as possible, but you have to help us , to help you.
Please use full sentences without abbreviations to describe , the best you can, the problems you're having.

Now, since that's out of the way, lets get on to fixing your motor.

From what we have read you have what appears to be a missing cylinder, no spark. A guess to the "No Top End" problem points to running on one cylinder. As was suggested , by another member, in another one of your posts, buy a harmonic balancer puller and pull the flywheel. Inspect the ignition coils for cracks in the outer casing. If either or both are cracked, replace them....both. Inspect the breaker points and reset the gap on each set to .020. Report back with your results. I posted the carb adjustments in another post.

I'm more than sure that when your manual arrives, you'll read many of the same solutions that you got here at iboats. Normal service routines are outlined and engine specifications will be listed too.

Good luck , and keep us updated on your progress.

compression test resultss 1972 25hp evinrude

Hey guys wats up I did a compression test on My motor today and I got 102 on # 1 cylinder and 97 on# 2 is it okay? If I put sea foam in will it improve? Inotice when the engine is iding it makes a ticking noise. Wats that?I got a cylimer book at the library and its not really detailing. Is the ones at ken cooke better?

Re: 1972 25hp Coils

I'll chime in, 'cause Jethro's problem sounds just like the problems I had. Here's what ya do: Pull the flywheel. Use a steering wheel puller. Replace both coils, both sets of points, and both sparkplug wires.

My motor ran beautifully, then one day, no WOT. I had no spark, weak spark, intermittant spark, yellow spark, blue spark, this spark, and that spark. Finally, it was a bad coil, one that I had replaced a year earlier. Had a small crack on the bottom.

As Steelespike said, after 34 years..... The reason why I say just to replace it all, is that yes, everything is old. And, parts are cheap. For about $60, you can get everything you need, and be done with it. No sense in replacing one part, then having to go into the motor again to replace another. Heck, a repair shop could even do it for you for about $200.

The kencooke manual will definately be better, but the clymer or seloc tells you everything you need to do this job. Just insure that you've studied the bottom of the stator plate to see how the wires are routed. Note the position of everything that's attached, and maybe even take a picture of it. Also note the torque spec for the flywheel.

Compression *could* be a little higher - seafoam will decarb the motor, and perhaps free up the rings, which will give you a bit more. If it's been sitting, just running it will free it up too. All ya can do is try.

By doing this, you won't have to use MY motto - "It couldn't be THAT part, I just replaced it!!!"

Good luck
Rick
