Re: 1972 25hp Coils
I'll chime in, 'cause Jethro's problem sounds just like the problems I had. Here's what ya do: Pull the flywheel. Use a steering wheel puller. Replace both coils, both sets of points, and both sparkplug wires.
My motor ran beautifully, then one day, no WOT. I had no spark, weak spark, intermittant spark, yellow spark, blue spark, this spark, and that spark. Finally, it was a bad coil, one that I had replaced a year earlier. Had a small crack on the bottom.
As Steelespike said, after 34 years..... The reason why I say just to replace it all, is that yes, everything is old. And, parts are cheap. For about $60, you can get everything you need, and be done with it. No sense in replacing one part, then having to go into the motor again to replace another. Heck, a repair shop could even do it for you for about $200.
The kencooke manual will definately be better, but the clymer or seloc tells you everything you need to do this job. Just insure that you've studied the bottom of the stator plate to see how the wires are routed. Note the position of everything that's attached, and maybe even take a picture of it. Also note the torque spec for the flywheel.
Compression *could* be a little higher - seafoam will decarb the motor, and perhaps free up the rings, which will give you a bit more. If it's been sitting, just running it will free it up too. All ya can do is try.
By doing this, you won't have to use MY motto - "It couldn't be THAT part, I just replaced it!!!"
Good luck
