I got the motor this winter and am new to boat motors. I got it to run good only one time. So i have alot of hope. I think that its a fuel intake issue. Any suggestions? Gas additives?Gas oil mix ratios? I do have an old tank and primer line. Not to sure about the rich lean switch either.

Barney,
It is hard to give any recommendations without a better description of what your problem is. Can you describe what it's doing or not doing?
Your fuel/oil ratio is 50:1. You need to be sure all the fuel lines are new and your tank is spotlessly clean and with new fuel in it. In my opinion, all the cleaners and gas additives and such do no good whatsoever for a motor that's not running o.k. to begin with. I believe you would be wise to read some of the info in the "top secret files" thread at the top of this forum, paying special attn. to Joe Reeves carb. adj. thread and the setting points and coils thread, too. I'm not sure if your motor has the old universal magneto or not, but you should check spark anyway. ALso check the water pump impeller for stiffness or dryrot.
Good luck,

Re: 1972 25hp Johnson wont stay running

I was on Barney's boat when we had the '72 Johnnyrude running and wanted to provide some additional information that will hopefully help out.

The motor probably hasn't been run in 2+ years as the previous owner had bought a larger boat that he used the last 2 years or so.

It came with a 1967 14' Cadillac boat and trailer(pictures of boat and outboard can be seen by clicking on the link for pics in my signature, click on1967 Cadillac boat to see barney's rig).

The good news is that he got a great deal on the package and the boat is extremely rare and classic.

The gas tank, hose and primer bulb seem to work fine. When squeezing the bulb you can tell that pressure builds and it seemed to get fuel where it needed to go since we did run the motor for 5-10 minutes. It did not seem like the motor was getting 100% of the fuel that it needs to run WOT however based on our speed, sound of engine, etc.

The sparkplugs have been replaced. Lower unit has been drained and lubed.

It came with an electric starter that was run up to the dash, however that has not turned the motor and we've only been using the pull start over the last 1-2 months to tinker with it.

I know that there are more pertinent details that would help but I am not much of a outboard motor expert either and this is a learning process for me as well. Thanks for the replies...let us know what other pieces of info would help troubleshoot this thing.

Re: 1972 25hp Johnson wont stay running

The first step on a motor new to me is to check compression. Then, I always check the ignition for good spark. There's an excellent chance that your motor is only running on one cylinder. If your coils will both make a spark that will jump a 1/4 inch gap with a hot blue spark, then it's on to the fuel system. I'd be suprised if you have good spark on both. If good spark, don't be scared of the carb. ---they're easy to clean. Don't try to take out the high speed jet without the right tool. Just try to run a tiny piece of wire through it and soak it/blow it out with carb cleaner and comrpessed air. If you try to take the high speed jet out without the right tool, you will likely ruin it.
Good luck---and if you get bored, I'd love to see a pic of the rig!:)
Later,

Another aspect to look at is the fuel pump, if you feel like your not getting fuel at WOT you could have a weak pump, the kits are cheap and they are easy to install.

Re: 1972 25hp Johnson wont stay running

Update on the motor is that we had it running last night out to the fishin' hole and she sounded great.:D

After running it for 5 minutes a little surging took place but she settled down and started running more smoothly.

Actually got to WOT for the first time and I estimate the speed to be 15-20mph. All that was done to get her running was cleaning out the carb, new plugs, lower unit drained and replaced, and some new gas mixed correctly.

Congrats to barney for getting his old 25hp running and also for the 17in Walleye that he caught last night as well. That should taste good tonight:D
