Great engine. Good year.

Just do the due diligence and check all the usual stuff.

1. Compression. Even between two cylinders.

2. Lower unit gear lube. Clean.

You'll probably have to do some maintenace such as a water pump and a carb. cleaning. But, that engine is easy to work on.

Good motor. Still has the magneto/points ignition. I'm not a big fan of the early electronic ignitions, which started about 1977.

'72 was a good motor, having been in production for 17 years--as a 15hp, then 18hp then 20hp, then 25. Plenty of time to get the bugs out in all those years.

But they added a bug in 1971 and up, resulting in poor idle compared to the pre-1971. I know how to fix that, but can't say here.

Would you have to kill us all if you reveal this secret?

Yea, I'm curious as well. I have an '81. Was it fixed by then?

Re: 1972 25hp Johnson

Well, I'll tell you this much: The 1970 still dumped the crankcase drains into the exhaust, a system that had been in use for years. Starting with the '71's they routed the crankcase drains into the upper cylinder via the bypass port. The idea of course is to burn the excess fuel instead of dumping it. But the reality of it is that that just makes the upper cylinder run rich compared to the lower cylinder. Reality also says that the extra rich fuel in the top cylinder doesn't completely burn anyway, and it still winds up going out with the exhaust.

It is simple to retrofit it back to the 1970 system. But not so simple as just installing the hose fitting. Drilling is required. And the drilling is also simple if you know where/how. The result is exactly like the 1970 motors. Powerhead removal is not required.

Now, the question is---do I give instructions for a process that might violate EPA mandates or not? I don't want anybody to get in trouble, especially me.

I have a '73 25hp Johnson. Do I need to worry about this also? If so, I would appreciate the solution also. Thanks.

Let's put this in perspective. A '73 motor is over 35 years old. It is not a problem to worry alot about, if you are satisfied with the way your motor runs.

Okay, I won't worry about it too much. I just bought this motor and I haven't had a chance to take it out on the water and give it a serious run yet. So, while I know it runs, I just don't how well at this point.

It is not to "worry" about on any of them. I was just pointing out that there were a lot of complaints about poor idle, especially when the owners previously had older motors and knew how they used to be. If you are happy with the way it runs, forget I even mentioned it.

Also, let's take the opportunity to mention that the retrofit won't cure a motor that idles poorly due to other problems.

If you have poor idle and suspect the drain system, simply pull the hose off the bypass cover and temporarily plug the fitting. Does it idle any better? Enough better to warrant retrofitting it? What you get with the hose off is what you will get with the retro.

I have a 1973 Evinrude and can't say enough great things about it. I have routinely ran it at WOT for over an hour and traveled well over 100 miles in a single day. It's a pull start-only and has started every time - even when it's below 20?.

It is also very easy to service and maintain.

In a nutshell, you can't go wrong.

I've got 2 '72s. One 20 and 1 25, both Johnsons. The 20 will run all day, wide open or just putting along, starts 3 pull first time at dock, 1rst after that. The 25 is an electric start and a work in progress. If you don't take the 25, let me know where it is.
