I recently bought a 2hp Johnson ( 2R72M ) outboard to restore. The inside of the gas tank has a bit of rust that seems come off with an initial finger wipe inside. What is the best way to clean the inside of the tank and keep it protected.

Thanks,

Remove the tank from the motor. Remove the shut-off valve and plug the hole. Dump about half a bottle of rubbing alcohol in the tank, and a handfull of nuts (machine nuts, not eating nuts). Now shake it up like a coctail till your arm falls off. Dump all the stuff out and rinse out with water. If you are satisfied, rinse again with alcohol or gas. You can seal it with one of the tank sealers on the market. Motorcycle shops normally have it. Or, if you use it fairly regular, just keeping fresh gas/oil mix in it will prevent rusting.

Interesting, I will do as you instructed. I hope this works, this tank was only made in the years of 1971, 72,73, and 1974.
