Hello and thanks in advance for any help!!!
I am tuning up my motor,
part# 40252E 1972 evinrude 40hp(electric start)
While dropping lower end to change impeller and oil the driveshaft DID NOT come out with it. I can't seem to get it out either???
The key made groove in impeller housing but is fine...I need to remove shaft to properly install impeller and new key in shaft...
any suggestions on removing shaft without damaging?
or what can I do???
I can see where the old impeler was INCORRECTLY installed last time making a groove 2 inches above where it was supposed to sit?
Please help???
Tom

i believe the drive shaft is supposed to come out of the gear case and motor. it might be easier installing the water impeller if u leave the driveshaft in the motor. just cant turn upside down cause oil will spill out. it might be rusted up there:eek:

if replacing impeller it a must to get drive shaft out. but im not even sure if u can get oil up there to lub

Thanks Coolguy! Yes I am going to try that today. I'm leaving shaft in place then replacing the shaft key. I'll refill lower with oil and try to slide everything back into place?
The secret will be getting the new shaftkey by impeller housing and properly in place???
If this doesn't work I have NO CLUE what to try next? I will definately have to get shaft out???
Motor was running fine BUT I just wanted to change impeller + Oil like you guys insructed...
Will shaft come out if I dismantle top??? Really don't want to BUT may have no choice?????????

If I am understanding the situation.....You need to seperate the shift rod via a connector. To get to the connector, there will be a small plate with two screws about mid-way on the lower half of the motor. Take the plate off and you will see where the 2 shifter rods are connected. Hope this helps!
