Test your rectifier. You don't say where the purple wires are.

Yellow and yellow/gray stripe wires go from stator to the terminal strip. Then same color wires continue on to the rectifier. Red wire from rectifier goes to starter solenoid (battery cable side). That's it, as far as the charging circuit goes. The monkey nutz wires also connected there are for the shift circuit. If all the wires are correct, and it doesn't charge, the rectifier is most likely shot. It can be tested, y'know.

How tough the carbs are I'll tell you this weekend if you haven't beat me to it. (going to do mine)

Looking at the wiring diagram in my 71' manual I see a purple going from the the thermo switch to #4 screw on the terminal strip, then on to the choke switch in the control box.

There is also a prpl/grn going from the diode and lead assembly to the #7 screw on the terminal strip then on to the shift selector.

So I'd say(guessing really) that they are either choke or that could be your shifting problem. I'd chase them harder and see where they go.

Do a compression test. Report your findings.

If you've done boat motor carbs before these aren't bad. Took me about 3 hrs to R&R/clean/rebuild.

Worst part in the remove/install was getting the bottom starboard nut off for the carb and dealing w/ the little flowback hose at the bottom of the air silencer. Just due to tight spaces and that's nothing out of the ordinary for a boat motor.

On the clean/rebuild hardest part was dealing with the rubber/plastic piece that seals?/locks? the low speed needle in place. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't get the needle to thread through the new one and ended up just reusing the old ones as they were in good shape.

Also the high speed jets I had to grind a small screw driver to fit into the passage (through the bowl drain) to get them out. Unless they absolutely can't be blown out from through the bowl side passage using cleaner and compressed air I'd leave them in place. You'll be able to hold the opening in the bowl to the light and should be able to see light through the jet to know if its plugged.

Re: 1972 50 hp evinrude elctric shift

My suspicion is that the purple wires (purple are associated with the choke) were cut so that the choke plates don't close until the motor warms up and the thermo switch finally lets the choke plates open all the way. There was a service bulletin about this. It said to disable the thermo activated choke. You would still have electric choke, but the plate would open up all the way after the choke switch was released. There should be a jumper wire so that both coils of the choke would open the plates when the switch was used.
