I have a 72 johnson 50hp. 50ESL72 is the model number. I am trying to figure out the wiring, it is not wired correctly. it is missing the shift diode, and missing the safety switch. The motor runs in forward only. I know the shift switch in the remote is good, the shift solenoids are bad. my question is, will my motor shift if i replace the shift solenoids in the lower unit, without a shift diode or safety switch?

If you have confirmed all the electrical system down to the solenoids is good, the solenoids might correct the problems. Remember that there is also a pump in the lower unit that has to work properly, any water in the lower unit, proper oil in there?

If the mtr is stuck in fwd it could be lu probs or else no current is going to the green and blue wires to activeate the solenoids. The shift diode is another issue.
