Cannot find where part # 25 main bearing dowel pin belongs. There is no hole for it to go into on the upper gear case or on the bearing. The one on the rear part is in place (furthest from the prop) but one ended up on my bench when I pulled out the prop shaft/ gear assembly. My manual tells me there should be a hole for it to go into but there is not. It had to come from somewhere? Also wondering how to remove the bushing so I can change the shift shaft o-ring. A guy on you tube tapped it and then removed with a bolt by screwing into it through a block of wood. Isn't it junk after you tap it? Or can you re-use it?

False alarm it must be the waterpump impeller dowel that dropped out of my parts cup or the shaft and on to the bench. This is the only reasonable conclusion and I do not have any extra parts. I still need opinions on how to remove the shift shaft bushing on both the 72 6 hp and 70' 25 hps.

The dowel pin is just a locator for the two halves of the gearcase.
The impeller drive is a key.

"The dowel pin is just a locator for the two halves of the gearcase." So does that mean you don't need the dowel pin I cannot determine where it belongs. All pictures I have seen indicate it holds the bearing nearest the prop in place. There is no hole in the gear case on the top or the bottom nor is there a hole in the bearing itself. I am not confusing it with the dowel that holds the bearing at the rear of the gear case (furthest from the prop) that is commonly misaligned. I just don't want to put it back together and have a little 3/8 dowel sitting there b/c I don't know where it goes. I did find the "T" shaped impeller key so it is not a "false alarm" after all.

from what i can see.....0300611 is the front dowel ( you call it rear). when you say 3/16 , do you mean length or dia?

it is about 3/8 in length. It looks just like a dowel that would go through the shaft of a 25 hp to run the impeller. I guess I will post some pics and hopefully clear this up. Thanks all as always.

is this the pin that goes through the top of the d/s that holds the carbon seal, spring, etc.and seals the lower crankshaft ?..as to removing that shift shaft bushing, F_R makes a tool so you can just drive that bushing out and reuse it....I've used it on a 6 and 25 hp. both

Good guess but no. That is a roll pin and I already removed that (and destroyed it in the process). Thanks for responding!!

ok...look at your gear head < the piece your propshaft extends from >...do you see a hole, or outline of a hole, the same diameter as this pin?...now look at the upper gear case shell, directly inline with the back pin and at the opposite end of the shell..do you see the impression or outline of another hole ~ the same diameter of this pin?...if so, that's where this pin or another like it resides and serves to align and hold that gear case head and the bearing within it so that when the gear case is together the oil passages in the bearing are in a position to pick up oil even if the oil level is low < that's my own explanation anyway >. I have just drilled another hole next to the the original ones in each piece and reset the pin. If that's not where this pin came from, I'm at a loss....good luck

If you look at the pics there is no hole in either the gear case head or the housing. I am in the process of doing a much needed organization/ clean out of my work area. I have several drive shafts from 1970's 25 hp rudes/johns and the dowel must have dropped out of one while I was shuffling them around. This is what happens in a messy work area. Thanks to all. I will keep you posted on my progress unless your sick of hearing from me. LOL
