1972 65hp has problem accelerating

I have a 1972 65hp Evinrude hydroelectric shift that starts fairly easy and seems to run good other then when trying to transition between idle and load. It always wants to die whether warmed up or not. If I flick the choke switch real quick and then try to give it gas I can get it to accelerate. if in neutral I can rev the motor just fine, but in gear it wants to die unless I flick that choke switch real quick. My understanding is that these carbs have no accelerator pump, but it acts like it needs more fuel when transitioning from idle under load so any hints on what might be the possible culprits? Thanks.

How old is the gas? Almost sounds like a carb problem. Some other things to check, compression, spark, does the primer bulb pump up firm. Maybe have someone pump the primer bulb while trying to accerlate.

The gas is fresh and trying to pump the bulb doesn't help. Would carb floats set too low cause this? Maybe a vacuum leak?
