Replacing my coils on my 1972 Evinrude 65HP motor. I've read over the instructions for putting the coil kit together and I think I have a good handle on it but I want to make sure I don't screw anything up, because these things ain't cheap. So a couple questions (see pic).

coil_kit.jpg

1. The spring connector that goes on the end of the spark plug wire-- so I need to strip about 1/8" of insulation off the end (still need to remove the inner white insulation in the pic). The point of the spring goes into the wire and makes contact, and the stripped end should "make contact with the spring part" as the instructions say, so there's 2 points of contact, understood. Should the wire just touch the spring? Seems like kind of a flimsy setup. Should it maybe be soldered on for a better connection?

2. The instructions show the spark plug wire already attached to the coil, but it isn't. There's a metal spiky thing in the hole that the wire goes into, that can be seen in the pic. Do I need to strip anything off the end of the wire to get it to fit, or do I push the wire in as is, and the expansion of the wire from the spike causes it to stay firmly in the coil? I'm thinking the second option, but I don't want to force anything unless I know what I'm doing.

3. Bonus question-- just curious. There's a thin plastic sleeve that the instructions say to cut into 2 2" pieces and insert on the spark plug wire. What's the 2-part sleeve for-- extra insulation? Protecting against wear & tear?

Thanks!

i strip back enough wire to get a twist on the spring, that way you have good contact. the little pin has threads on it, no stripping, twist the wire in, making sure the center of the wire make contact with the pin. makes the boot slide on easier.

Ohh, the pin in the coil is threaded and the wire screws on...got it now. Thanks TD!
