Engine runs fine, but there's no way to look at it and see if it's pumping water. It's not overheating so everything must be fine, but shouldn't there be a way to check it out.

Thanks,
Skip

There is. There should be spray coming out of the exhaust relief holes on the back of the motor a few inches below the hood. If that isn't good enough, you can put a telltale on it. Look for a 1/8 pipe plug on the top of the cylinder head. Screw a fitting in there and route a length of speedometer hose to a hole you'll drill in a strategic location in a back corner of the pan. I did it on my 1970 60Hp and it worked quite nicely.

you should see water squirting out the side of the lower engine shroud.A hose leading from the engine should be visible with the cowling off.I have a 79 70hp johnson, but that does'nt matter,if it is liquid cooled it has to be expelling the warm water somewhere...

I've got a 74 70hp, the water will shoot out of two holes one on each side close to the cav plate and you won't see it if boat is in the water, be warned if you are using muffs water will come out there if the pump is out, you should have a spray coming out of the exhaust relief holes just below the power head setting still with boat in the water, best check is to hold your hand on the port side of the motor on the water jacket, if it gets hot and stays that way change the pump and t-stat, you should be able to feel the t-stat as it cycles it will warm up then cool off. If in doubt change the pump, cheap fix instead of $$$$overhaul
