Purchased this motor at an estate sale several years ago. Never had it running right. Initially the 3 internal fitted fuel lines, were rotted from either age or ethanol and were replaced, with OEM fitted hoses.

Motor would never start and idle, in the normal, neutral, "start position", but starts right up if in gear, and throttle opened up, though the carburetor seems to be a bit wet. It seemed to run "ok", on a test pond, but when throttle was back to idle, it would die immediately.

No firing at all in neutral, start position.

Update.

I did get it to idle on and off, max of a minute or so, most times 10-15 seconds. it appears fuel delivery is probably the issue.

Just looking for things to try without disassembly of the carb. Maybe there is some crud, from the previously rotted fuel lines.

I just noticed this post. What was wrong with it? I have a 1973 9.8hp which runs now that I replaced almost the entire ignition system. I bought it cheap and it had sat for many years.
