Hi all,

I'm helping a friend of mine with his "new" motor. The model # is: 857HD

It has no spark and I want to test to see if it is a distributor problem or the CD module. My problem is that I don't have a wiring harness and ignition switch yet. The test I'm familiar with involves putting a spark tester in the coil, grounding it, and then grounding the wire on the distributor. I believe this test calls for the key switch to be turned "on."

Is there any way to do a test without having a wiring harness and key switch?

Thanks,

Shane

Yes. Hook up a battery to the starter soleniod, jump it with the screwdriver or temp switch, and check it. You can also check for spark by spraying a little mixed fuel into the carbs, and trying it. It should run while fuel is present.

The only way to stop it is running out of fuel (not healthy BTW), or by grounding the spark, or by grounding the white , (or black with yellow stripe on later models) wire on the terminal strip to frame ground anywhere.

Your motor probably uses a capacitor discharge ignition.Similar to that used on some older cars.It must be tested only with the proper procedures or you can damage the system.Get yourself a manual and follow it carefully. You may find one at the library.

I found out, from a mechanic friend of mine, that if you connect the red and blue wires together on the terminal, is simulates turning the ignition key to the "on" position.

This is pretty useful information because I didn't have a wiring harness & key switch yet.

Shane
