I may be able to get my hands on a "low hours" 1972 85hp (an 850) engine. Before I even go look at it, are these historically known to be good/bad?

Thanks,
Dan

Not a bad engine but the wires are starting to rot off them and in some cases can lead to expencive repairs

Plus.. Non stainless driveshaft, could be "Fused" into crankshaft splines if not serviced regularly.

Excellent point 460. I didn't even know they used stainless driveshafts. Shows you what I know. I learn something every day. Was there a specific point in time when the manufacturers switch to stainless? Is the fusing equally common in freshwater and saltwater engines?

I Think 1976 was the first for Mercs, but Johnsons had them earlier. There is no problem with them, if serviced and greased regularly.
