I installed a remote kit and adjusted the cables on the 9.5 that has been run with a tiller for its entire life. I bought the motor from my uncle 2 weeks ago for 250 (is that a good deal?).

The motor started right up the night I bought it. Idled nicely in a cooler full of water. Last night I hooked up the remotes I removed the spring from the tiller handle and reasembled the tiller (per the remote kit instructions). This morning tried to start it...no luck. The motor turned over this morning and idled roughly for 15 seconds then died. I pulled on it some more and after about 10 pulls it turned over again and idled for 15 seconds. Since then, i cant get it to start again.

I know this is a very vague problem, but any ideas? Should I spray some starter fluid in the carb? Would the remote installation have caused a problem? Do I still need to use the tiller handle for anything now that I have remotes??...help! my triceps are killing me!

It's very difficult to say with any certainty but from what you said it sounds as though it worked fine prior so it probably has something to do with your work. Basic starting procedure for the 9.5 is: Prime the bulb, shift to neutral, turn tiller as far as you can (till it hits the stop), pull choke and then pull the rope.

I realize the tiller is no longer installed but make certain your doing the same procedure albeit with your new controls. If you changed any settings re: slow speed knob try to put it back to where it was. Best of luck. Rick.

To be honest I don't pay much attention to the start/stop location. Perhaps I should. With the shifter in neutral, there is a stop that only allows the throttle (bare in mind I'm talking the tiller here) to go so far. That's where you want it to be for starting. Hope that helps. Rick.

ok, that makes sense. i know exactly what you are talking about as the throttle hits the screw that holds the gear shif unit together.

i'm more concerned with my fouled plugs at the moment and how to get this baby running!

You want the throttle on Start or as far past it towards fast as it will go until it stops.

I would suggest you get yourself a spark tester. A great little device that clamps to ground and you hook you plug wire to an adjustable screw. You can adjust the screw gap to 1/2 inch and see if you have a nice blue/white snappy spark on both wires that will jump the 1/2 inch gap. That way you will know spark is or is not a part of the problem. They sell for under 10 dollars at the larger automotive parts places. According to your description the spark didn't sound all that healthy. Don't despair, I'm sure you will get this thing going. The harder it is the more you will learn. Rick.

i appreciate all your help.
