1972 Aquasport 24' Repairs

I just bought a 1972 24 foot Aquasport as my first boat. It needs some small repairs. First, some wood trim needs replacement. Any thoughts on the type of wood to use? It seems to me that marine plywood would be acceptable given the age, etc. of the hull. Second, the hinges on some of the hatches are loose. It appears that the screw holes in the fiberglass have expanded through wear so that they are now nearly twice the diameter of the screws. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks in advance.

Congats on your first boat purchase. You don't say what type of repairs. If it is structural, such as flooring or cabinetry, marine grade plywood is fine. If possible loose screws can always be replaced with nuts and bolts. Just make sure you use stainless.<br /> <br />Mike

Thanks for the quick response. This is not structural. It's trim type stuff around hatches, etc.

Teak is the wood of choice for trim work.<br /><br />I found a lumber supply co around here that sells a wood pronounced ooplae...oopla...geez i cant remember, I know that they referred to it as the poor mans teak, and they said it is what most people in Maine use since they go through so much wood. It's about 1/8th the price of teak and looks just like it. <br /><br />Hopefully you have a wood supply shop near you. <br /><br />I will try to get the right name to you tmw.<br /><br />Bobby
