Seals are standard and can be bought at any bearing supply store. Since they usually have stainless garter springs in them, they cost 17-25 bucks each. Shift rod seal was never changed and used on almost all lower units so you can get that part at your local Merc dealer--Just ask for a shift rod seal from a 1989 85 or 90 Force. Costs about ten bucks. Water pump impeller is about 20 bucks.

Now gears and dog clutches are a different story--they are quite expensive new and if you need them, you are better off looking for a good used lower unit, or salvage them from a trashed lower unit if you can find good ones.

In the end, whether you are overhauling the lower unit alone or the whole engine (parts are available at The Chrysler Crew) it will cost anywhere from 100 to 500 bucks which is more than the engine is worth. Timewise if you have a manual and have never done it before, anywhere up to 10 or so hours working time

Is it worth it? Depends on your veiwpoint. If you enjoy that type of work, want to keep the engine for whatever reason, and take satisfaction the first time the engine starts again--yes. If not, then probably not worth the money and time.

thanks...I contacted Franz at the Crew and he has rebuit lower units for 450. If I can get the old one off how much work will it take to get ot back on? any pointers or tricks?

Shifting question- the mechanic I had check the compression and the spark also adjusted the idle...now it idles a little high. Could that hace caused the motor to shift rough and crack the seal? could it have been a clutch issue?
