Can anyone tell me how to check the CD modual on a 1972 55HP outboard? I've checked out the retifier, have voltage to the points, but no spark what-so-ever. Where can I find one if this one is bad? Can these just go bad overnight? Can you ruin them by cleaning with carb cleaner?

Thanks for any help anyone can give us.

If its a Magna Power all you have to do to ck. if is make sure you have 12 volts to the amp and with the distbuter wire disconnected arc the wire to ground if you have fire its the points if you don't it's the amp. As far as threst of your quistion almost any thing can burn out that system, low battery, loose connections, dirty connections any fluctation in voltage below 10v or above 13.5 volts--Bob

This motor does not have a distributor, just a rectifier, 2 sets of points, CD modual, two coils and then the two spark plugs. We're able to get a spark now and the engine runs for a moment and then just dies like someone turned off the key. When checking the spark, sometimes it seems like we have a very inconsistant spark. We've taken loose all of the connections we can, sanded, and then retightened. Any other ideas? Do CD units go bad 100% or do they come and go? For the few moments it runs, it runs very smoothly but then just dies.

Mark, I was thinking of a 3 cyl. Duh, but the principal is the same, if you have 12 volts on the blue wire and each time you ground a pt. wire you should have spark, you must leave the volt meter hooked up to see you don't lose power to the amp,to tell if you have a bad switch or wire problem, then then trying to start the engine or checking by arcing the pt wires if you have voltage thru the amp to the pts and arcing them don't give tou spark it is the amp--Bob

Bob bear with me here. When you are referring to the amp, do you mean the rectifier which the manual says is the black box thats about 2" by 3" by 1" thick with 5 wires coming of it, or is it the cd unit which is about 4" by 6" by 3" thick?

The amp or CD box for the engine, has 2 wire to the points a brn and a white brn, a blue power wire, a white tach wire, 2 wires to the coils a white gray and a gray (6wires) the rectifier has 3 wires from under the flywheel, plus a purple and red wire from the harness--Bob
