I just aquired an evinrude 1972 25hp for $200. I am currently going thru it and taking almost everything apart and cleaning and reasembling. I have a couple questions so far. ( I have read a hundred old posts so far. THere is great info on this site)

1. How do I remove the lower unit? Is there a pin for the shifter rod?

2. Is there a way to make the motor stay fully tilted up? It seems like there is no mechanism there to keep motor up while dragging my john boat around on the ground.

3. The weatherstiping on the cowl is falling apart. Is there parts to replace it?

4. What is the tiny hose for on the starboard side of the block? It is like 2 feet long and has like a 1/8'' diameter.

5. My choke puller is plastic and is having a real hard time pushing in and out?

Thanks in advance.

Re: 1972 evinrude 25

1 - Remove small oblong plate (2 screws) on side of long exhaust housing. Remove just one bolt from brass shift connector inside.

2 - Tighten nut on tilt rod to increase tension on washers between transom brackets and swivel bracket.

3 - Unlikely you'll find that item. Check for good hood at outboard repair shops.

4 - Recycle hose for excess fuel not being burnt.

5 - Take that item apart, clean and grease as needed.
