1972 Evinrude 40 HP Charging system question..

I have the motor listed in the title model # 40202E. Says Norseman on the back of the cover. I recently aquired this motor and upon close inspection I see what looks like a missing generator/alternator.

Reason I ask is that during a trip to the auto parts store to get some gear lube, I ran into a guy that has the same engine. Same year, same model and he says he has a gen/alt. on it. It runs off a surpentine belt under the flywheel.

Now, on my engine, there is an empty bracket that looks like it can hold a gen. I see the belt pully under the flywheel. When I go to these websites to see if I can find a gen. there is NO listing of a gen/alt. in any of the parts listings.

Question: Is this motor supposed to have a gen/alt? If so, gow can I find part # and price? If not, what charges the battery?

You can go to the BRP Evinrude website and see from their parts lists whether your motor ever had an alternator.

Thank you for the info. I did go to that sight and the parts breakdown is identical to all the other web sites I went to. There is no mention of an alt/gen in any of the parts diagrams I saw. Maybe it doesn't have one but how then does the battery get charged? Kind of makes you go hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!

All motors of that era didn't necessarily have charging capability. My wife's family had a mid sixties 75HP Evinrude with elec start, but no alternator.

I had a 71 model and it did not have a charger.

The 1972 40 did not come stock with a generator. There was an optional DC generator kit, PN 383392, that provided the bracket, generator, and junction box.

Are you kidding me????? WOW. I guess you had to charge the battery a lot. I see that the parts lists do show a magneto on the motor so that must be what keeps it running and the battery is just for starting it ( just thinking out loud) I really have no clue about these motors.

If you are using a good battery and your engine is tuned properly you would be surprised how many starts you will get without charging your battery, maybe 60-70. I knew a guy who had a pontoon with an engine with no charging system, he installed a solar panel to keep his battery charged, he never had a dead battery.

I looked up that part on 3 different websites. It shows it as obsolete. That answers that question!

The motor does not need a battery at all to run. A fully charged up battery will start a manual shift motor for a long time (like a week) before it needs to be charged. The electric shift motors came with a generator because the shift coils draw somewhere around 3 amps when activated. When I boated in salt water, I routinely removed the generators from my motors and sold them because they were a pain to keep maintained since the motors were routinely soaked by waves.
