I purchased a 1972 40 HP Model 40202E from a guy that says the motor ran last year. Upon getting the motor home, I cleaned the mouse nests out of it as it seems it has been sitting behind his garage for awhile. I put a battery on it just briefly to check/confirm the following:

The starter works and engages.
The motor does turn but seems to be stiff. ( I'm thinking that may be because it's been sitting??????)
There is spark at both cylinders.

Because it has been sitting, I didn't want to spin it over too long.

What I would like to know is what I need to do to check this engine out. What should I do to prep it to start. If you can guide me on what to watch out for etc. Any other recommendations would be very appreciated.

Thank you all.
Bill

Look in the "Top Secret File", there is a lot of information there including a section on awakening a sleeping outboard, it might ansewer a lot of questions for you.

I didn't buy it either Steve, but I want to be careful and at least not really screw things up.
