First thing to do is check your prop hub for slipping. If that's okay it could be your forward gear and shift dog.

When the motor is not running it should be in forward gear !-------When you try to turn the prop by hand then what happens ?

If the hub has slipped I still can go into reverse and it does move the boat . So can the hub still have slipping in it

It can slip in forward because you're creating more thrust.

Scratch a line across the prop and the center of the prop. Take it out and run it and if the marks get out of alignment, the hub is slipping.

Re: 1972 evinrude 65 hp shifting issue

Thank you boobie for the info . I'll try it out this weekend . One more question for you . On the muffs the props seems to turn normal but once it's in the water in forward I throttle down a bit and the boats barely moves so from your experience do you think the hub could be spun . I believe this motor hasn't been in the water for along time . Bought it from a guy who had it in his garage thanks again for all your info thank you Eric

With the motor off in forward gear I can turn the prop clock wise about 4 + inches

Can you rotate the flywheel by forcing the prop to turn ?

Turn so the flywheel goes the correct way,---------If it turns then block the flywheel and see if you can still turn the prop.-----I am sure you can figure out a way to block the flywheel !!

Trying to turn it by hand is a futile test, unless it is really, really bad slipping. I don't know of a man alive that can produce 65 horsepower by hand. If he can, I'm staying away from him!!!

Do the mark and run test.

65 HP and the slipping torque value for a prop like that, are a totally different measurement.

He still has to take it out and run it. Or take it to a prop shop that has the tools to check it.

Re: 1972 evinrude 65 hp shifting issue

Ok sorry for reporting back . I marked the prop to see if it was slipping took the boat out to the lake and put it into forward gear and it still was only moving the boat about 2 mph also it took the prop off and the marks on the prop where still ligned up and before a took the boat out I also drained the lower end fluid and filled it with new type c fluid . I noticed when I had the boat in the water in forward I could hear some noise in the motor to where it was trying to shift more into forward . I still had a good reverse and nutural . Anything else I should check out thanks guys for all the help
