I was given a 72 Evinrude 65 hp that has not been run in at least 8 years. Any suggestions on what to do before trying to start and what may need to be replaced. It looks clean and I know it had very low hours.

Insure fuel tank and lines are clean and clear.Drain any old tarnished fuel from carb bowls and flush clean fuel mix through lines to evacuate any old fuel or debris.May also be a good idea to simply replace with new fuel lines and fittings.Fill tank with fresh 87 octane premix.Change lower unit oil and note whether any water or milky color is present when draining.Replace sparkplugs and while they are removed inject some two stroke oil in each cylinder and turn engine by hand several times to prelube cylinder walls.

You may very well need to rebuild carbs after engine has sat idle for that long.Give it a crank and see if she runs.
