The motor ran fine when I stored it for the winter last year. My father borrowed the boat and called to say it would not start. He got a friend to come over and pull the flywheel off. Under the wheel it was slightly rusty, they used sandpaper to "lightly" clean it up. While in there they used sandpaper to 'lightly' clean the points. Now it runs but misfires, kind of stutters, but always starts. It has ran Perfect for about 30min. out of the 6hours I have had it running on the lake. Any good ideas? I think I should gap the points, but don’t know the gap. Never worked on outboard motors, but I have loads of exp. with automobiles. I will entertain any ideas, but would really like that point gap. The plugs are new and gapped, thanks.

Hi WeBull...

For starters, get a service manual if you plan on doing any work on the engine. They can be had from iboats which are the generic ones. This should cover what you need.

If it were me, I'd install a new set of points. The sandpaper routine is good in an emergency but if the points need it, then it's time to replace them.

If I recall, the gap on the points if .010. Should be marked on the flywheel or on the armature plate. Also check compression and overall spark. Keep us posted to your progress. Thanks.
