Does anyone know - is their a specific position the tiller gear has to be in to reinstall it? Should the motor be in either r or n or f, i can't get it to go to start position unless its in forward, so i assumed the prior owner messed with the tiller arm with the gear at the end and reinstalled it incorrectly. The only time i get it to fire is if its in forward, does it have to be in start to start?

Wheres the best place to by a new fuel pump, the one i have is kaput. i hope thats the problem, currently i have the gas line hooked directly to the fuel intake on the carb, just to get her to fire.

i've seen reference to a tube for the water pump, is this visable from the top inside of the motor, i had a rubber tube just laying in the front (underneath) the gear shift mechanism, and i couldn't find any places it might have connected?

Thanks to anyone who can help me out.

Under the cowling you can see the stop that prevents the shifter from moving as the throttle is increased. When reinstalling the tiller you just have to make sure that when the grip is in the shift position, it just misses the stop. It's so you don't shift into gear at WOT. I think I had to take it off and move it one tooth to line everything up right. The just make sure you have full range of throttle. Bear in mind there may be other reasons your motor only starts in that position. How does it run otherwise?? Secondly if you search these threads you'll find info about fuel pumps for these motors. Hope this helps, Drake

p.s. The water tube is not visible from under the cowling.....It sticks out of the powehead down to the Lower end/Gearcase housing, and sticks into the waterpump on reassebly. For a great look at this motor..... try http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=a44b759b9e949254465fe433dd59da1d

Re: 1972 Evinrude 9.5

Thanks for the reply. i have't really got the motor to do much more than run for a few seconds a then off it goes. i'm going to order up a new fuel filter and see if that fixes it. this motor took a guick bath for the guy i bought it from, they cleaned it out and it sat for a year on a covered dock. i'm hoping that i dont's have to mess with the carb. i read some posts here that make it sound like you can drop the bowl on the carb with carb hooked up. but i think i have to take it off to dump the bowl?

thanks

It took a bath? Like as a swim? Does cleaned it up mean tore it down or they had it running soon after retrieval? Or not tore down and /or ran and has sat for a year? If the latter, junk it.
