Are these supposed to start in gear? I can't get it into neutral to pull the cord. Is this correct? I don't see how your supposed to tune it if the props always turning. I have taken the tiller arm off and on 50 times and i can't get it.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

No start in gear. Fix that first. The gear shift is on the side of the engine, not on the tiller handle. IF you don't see it, it may be broken off.

The next step is to remove the lower unit.

I don't remember those motors having anything preventing starting in gear, but maybe I've forgotten.

But what I do know is that there is a lockout to prevent shifting at too high a throttle setting. THAT is probably why you can't get it into neutral. Your throttle is set too far toward "fast".

So, you say you have it as far toward "slow" as it will go? Aha, that is what I thought. The idle speed knob is screwed in too far. Back it off.

The idle speed knob is to preset a trolling speed. Turned clockwise increases the idle speed, counterclockwise decreases the idle speed.

Re: 1972 evinrude 9.5

Thanks for the picture. Apparently the shifter was broken off at some point. I'll have to check. I got this used and i rebuilt the carb and put on a new fuel pump.
The throttle on this unit has a forward and a reverse on the handle. The grip is metal and theres a plunger that sticks out at the end of throttle?
Anyone know what the plunger is for?
Maybe this has some kind of a after market part added.

All advice is much appreciated!!

I need to buy a shift lever for the above motor. Theres a casting stamp on the inside of the lever. Can anyone tell me the casting number?

Thanks

There were OMC tiller extension kits that had a metal grip.

Re: 1972 evinrude 9.5

Wow-you guys have it all. The picture of the handle with the plunger on it, is what i have on the end of the tiller/throttle.
Instead of the "white grip" i have a smooth metal grip with the plunger. I have the standard steering handle assembly. I don't think the plunger really does anything.
Whats the plunger for?
You know the more i think about it, i think they had a extension and its gone and the metal handle and plunger are still in tack-does that make sense??
I located a shifter assembly so hopefully will help to get this motor going.

Thanks for your response.

The extension was just aluminum tubing with a hole to fit the button on the grip. The metal grip replaced the standard plastic handle.

Here's a link to the patent.
http://www.google.com/patents?id=NydtAAAAEBAJ&pg=PA1&dq=gil's+Extension+Handle&source=gbs_selected_pages&cad=2#v=onepage&q&f=false

I think the company was called gil co and I have several of them. I find 3/4 copper pipe works well and the 3/4 connector fits right over the tiller handle, I drill a hole for the retainer. Use silver solder to join the connector to the pipe. Or do what ezeke did and use two pipes and make it adjustable. I wish they started making them again, the helms mates and other tiller extenders are too weak to be trusted, in my opinion.

Re: 1950 5.5 JOHNSON

The pull cord came out this weekend. Do you know of anyone who i can send this to to get it reinstalled?

Theres a rod on the right side of the motor (opposite the carb), it has a right angle bend in it and you can screw it in and out, you have to reach around and underneath the cowl to turn, what this do?

On the top of the motor, theres the triangular piece that you can flip in and out-what this for?

Lastly i can't remember how to post a new message, so i just added to the tale of this one.

All help is greatly appreciated.
