1972 Evinrude Throttle Problems

I have a 1972 50HP Evinrude outboard motor. Lately when using the throttle I can't get the boat to slow down past about 1/2 of full speed. I have to take the cover off the motor and adjust the throttle by hand to slow it down.

I'm somewhat familiar with engine repair but have no idea where to start when it comes down to the throttle and I can't find anything about throttle adjustment/repair in the manual I have. Can anyone tell me what causes this problem or what I could check?

Check and see if there is a return spring around the throttle arm/shaft (there should be, my 72 6HP has one). That could either be broken or binding.

Now, I am also assuming that you are using a remote throttle setup (not a tiller control). It's cable could be binding as well.

Thanks, I'll check that. And yes it does have a remote throttle.
