this is the beginning of what i hope will be a great adventure and experiment.... i got the floor up today (no pics of that today because it was dark when i finished) which had a soft spot right down the middle and a new starter put on the engine only to find out that while i was doing that i popped a fuel line and that ended my day since i was 20 miles from the nearest auto parts store.... im scared of the transom i dont really know what to do to inspect it or how for that matter since there is that large fiberglass piece over it... is that removable without a saw if so how...

Its a fair statement to say a transom that old is shot by now.
If you want to see just drill a hole near the bottom of the transom and inspect the wood chips, if its black it needs gutting.
They were never meant to last this long.
A soft deck means the stringers are rotted so the best approach is do the whole thing, pop the cap off and do it all from the inside.
A sawzall and angle grinder will do most of the demo along with a wonder bar (crow bar).

Read any of the rebuild threads to get an overview then tear into it.:D

I too reccomend ripping all the wood out and putting new in. The piece of mind once finished will be worth it:)

well i did rip the floor out but.... thats not the floor that cam with the boat..... it had been replaced once before i think because it was not watersealed however the stringers were and there still solid so lucky me lol the cap is coming off this weekend to inspect the transom. the motor is now running and running pretty well. the power pack had gone out on it i discovered but the compression test came back good all right between 115-120 the carbs have been put through the paces and come out good. so i ordered a new power pack and she fired up. putting on a new stator friday when it arrives

today i got the cap off.... that was a chore because someone had decided to fiberglass the cap to the hull.... why i don't know because they didn't do it all the way from front to back it was only done about 6 ft on each side.... then got the remainder of the floor up and the old transom out which was trashed... next weekend putting the new transom in and hopefully the floor

Might as well do the stringers and you'll have a new boat thats built better than the original was. At the rate you're moving along, not procrastinating, it will not be a "drag it out as long and painfull as possible" project.:)

And a good running engine always makes the boat worth it.

Re: 1972 Glastex Sea Star Restore Update

I have a 71 Seastar Wildcat by Glastex that has a soft transom and floor. Without tearing out the floor completely it looks like the stringers are hollow glass without wood core or anything and it appears to be original. Could anyone who had experience repairing one answer a couple of questions. Has anyone came across the hollow stringers (was this factory built)? What's the best method for replacing/reinforcing the transom (not looking to return to original just getting it sea worthy for the least cost & work)? How did you reattach the cap to the hull?
