Got one quick questions, and please forgive me I'm new this this motor thing.

1. I just brought this 100hp replacing a 60 hp that I had. I'm a little confused because the 60hp motor had a hole that the steering rod went through and bolted. The 72 just has a arm, do I have to change the steering arm on the boat or do I just bolt it up and keep rolling.

1972 was the last year for OMC motors without the torque tube for push/pull type steering systems. You need an adapter like this to convert the steering to work with your motor. I got mine through my OMC/BRP dealer, who probably ordered it from Donovan Marine.

Re: 1972 Johnson 100hp

Thanks guys for all your help, I'm leaning a great deal from this site and the help that i recieve from each one of you save me a great deal of money. I had a another question, I have a 1977 115 that I am using for parts and some of the parts are interchangable with the 72 100hp, I was wondering if anyone would know, will the engine mount from the 1977 115, fit on the 1972 100. If so that would solve my problem. Not only will I get rod tube on the mount from the 77 115, but I would get tilt and trim as well.

Thanks a lot I look at each part, and they are so close, some having the same part #, Can the sterring tube itself be remove from the 77 115hp, or is all that one piece connected to the motor mount.

Re: 1972 Johnson 100hp

I don't think it will, Mav. I wanted to do the same thing to my motor with a later model Johnson 70hp. My OMC dealer and I looked at it and found out that the transom mount assembly is not interchangeable.

What you might consider if the swap will work, is to put the powerhead from your 100hp on the other motor. This, of course, means that the rest of the parts motor must be serviceable. All of this said, I strongly recommend the steering adapter over trying to change your motor. I think you will find going this route to be a great deal less expensive and a great deal less hassle.

One thought on the transom mounted clamp for the push/pull system - they work quite well in general but do restrict the tilt of the motor somewhat. I have used both types of adapters and prefer the transom mounted torque tube. If, for some reason, you can't use the torque tube, however, the clamp system will work both safely and well.

Thanks, for your input and you may have a good point, about exchanging the powerheads, The frames look like they are the same. I priced one of the transom mounted arms and they ranged from 250.00 to 350.00. I think it would be cheaper to change power head over if they will fix. Now that was the price for hydraulic arm. I didn't see a manual arm anywhere. But what I did notice on the manual one and in the picture in this thread,is that tube is nothing but a threaded lead pipe that the arm rides in filled with grease and mount to the transom. Will this work, because I can go to home depot and get a pipe threaded and mount it to the transom and put grease boots on each end to keep the grease in.

There is no reason to spend $350 for one of these systems. I paid about $200 for mine, and that was via my OMC/BRP dealer. Here is a link for one that is rated for up tp 140 hp - it only costs $147.40. See "Boat steering front mount connection kit."

At this price, you would be hard pressed to have a powerhead swapped and tested for proper operation. I think you would also have a hard time making your own, properly constructed, adapter.
