First check the vent on the tank and make sure that it is open. If the tank vent is shut or clogged it can cause this. If not check the spark plugs to see if you are getting spark to them. Also check compression.

Thanks... I messed with the tank and the idle and got it to run. It sound good but when you put it in gear it just revz the engine up and does not engage into gear. neither forward or reverse. What do you think???

Re: 1972 Johnson 65 hp won't idle

If it is 1972 then it has the Selectric shift and is the same as mine. Are you saying that when you push the button(s) for fwd and reverse that it does not go into gear or that the boat does not move? If you can hear it shift in either direction and the boat does not move then it could be a spun hub. If you can't hear it shift then it is something with the selector switch or the shift solenoids/wires.

Have you had the engine long? Or is it new to you?

Re: 1972 Johnson 65 hp won't idle

The selector switch is behind the throttle lever and has three buttons (forward, neutral, reverse). In order to shift the engine into gear the throttle lever needs to be pulled back to idle speed. Then push the forward or reverse button button. You should hear it go into gear.

If you do not have these buttons on your control box (the box with the throttle lever) then it is not a 1972 65hp. It may be a different year. We may be talking about two different engines.

What is the model number of your engine? If it is a 1972 Evinrude 65hp it should be either 65272s or 65273s.

Have you had the engine long? Or is it new to you?

Sorry I missed the part about it being a 1972 johnson not an evinrude.

Regardless of brand the two engines were identical in that year with the exception of the paint and motor cover.

Go to evinrude.com(add the www.) and look at the engine diagrams look under Johnson 1972 and see if one of the model numbers matches your motor. If it does look at the drawing for the control box that should help.

Lake Dabanawa, Did you find and were you able to adjust the neutral saftey switch?

There is no insult intended on this next statement. I just am not sure if you understand how your motor operates(or that I understand what you are asking, could be either one). On these older 1972 and earlier models with the Selectric(electric) shift you have to push a button on the control box to put the motor in gear. Just moving the throttle lever in the control box forward does not put these engines into gear.

Please post back and let me know how it turns out.
