The carburetor is fouled; you should consider rebuilding it with a kit.

They rebuilt it at the Johnson place along with replacing the fuel lines and filter, and replaced the plugs and boots also. So could it be something else or did they screw it up?

Generally, when an engine speeds up if you pull the choke, it indicates that the fuel/air mix is too lean (short on gasoline).

If the carburetor is clean, you may need to reset the slow speed needle (15). Turning it clockwise increases the amount of fuel in the mix.

It's more likely that the high speed jet (27) is fouled. It's behind the drain plug in the float bowl, where it picks up any trash that falls to the bottom. Sometimes you can flush it by taking the plug out and squeezing the primer bulb a couple of times.

That is that the black knob on the front of the engine at #17. I turned it but it didn't make any difference any way I turned it.

I will try this also

well i turned the needle all the way in gently and backed it out 2 turns. no change, if anything worse. I tried the drain plug that you showed me and gas did come out but not very fast or strong like i thought...i thought it would shoot out.

It does not run very long at all now maybe a few seconds before it dies.

Oh and I did the carb ajustment in the TSF area also.

You should just get the rebuild kit and service the carbuetor if those did not help.

It's a lot easier to do with a factory service manual.

ok with the rebuild done it is running fine. However it does seem to be underpowered. Me(225lbs) and my son(165lbs) in a 12 ft alum jon could not get on plane. I am thinking I either need a bigger motor or something is wrong with this one. Leaning more to something wrong because the 1967 5.5 could put me and a friend(300lbs) and get on a plane.

See if the props on the 5.5 and 6 are the same pitch.
