I have a 1972 Johnson Outboard that has a cooling problem. From standing behind the motor the two cylinders on the right are cooling but the two on the left are not. I believe I may have a problem with the thermostat, and if that is so, where is the thermostat located.

Hi Clair

On a 1972 V4 motor you will find the thermostat housing on the rear of the motor below the cylinders, a rectangular plastic part with 2 hoses going to it, 1 from each cylinder block, when you remove the cover you will find a spring loaded pressure valve on the left and the thermostatic valve on the right. I have read a number of posts where the spring valve is faulty causing overheating problems.
