I have a 1972 65hp outboard motor with 72' Merc Controls. Thankfully people have helped me on this site to do some adjustments to the controls and how to properly use them.

My question this time around is if I have been driving my boat for a couple of hours and I stop for a bit, when I restart do I need to hold down the choke as I turn the key to start the engine? Or is the choke button only used for initial start up?

also, Is there a specific amount of time you would let an engine like this warm up before you use it? Or would you just go off of sound, just a little worried due to age, and I want to make sure it lasts.

Warm up all two stroke engines before WOT operation (as you would hopefully do with any engine [especially a new one] but also any old one that you want to keep in good shape too). I never choke once my old motors are warmed up from the initial start in the morning, unless they have sat sufficiently to get stone cold. My old inlines, (and I also ran a 1967 650 always started right up), so the hard starting problems mentioned here with old inlines is not my experience.

I agree with oldmerc...my 1150 has been started quite a few times in the last week since I got her doing various things with her...and after intial warm up...the start barely has time to work to start her up...kicks right off. And cold starts are actually way better than most I've been around seems like...starts better than my buddies black max 150...lol, that just eats them up...i love the old motors...guess thats why I have a 1970 C-10 with a 307, nothing like the old stuff...they knew how to really build stuff then..thats why they still run now, lets see how many new four strokes and full of electronics motors are still around in 2040...bet the old 1000 series will be...if they still have gas then...lol

the reason people have a hard time starting inlines is they don't give it enough gas when cold. they like to be almost flooded, to start cold. and usually start the rest of the day without problems.

Hey Jacob, fello 650'er. I've got a 73 650. Bought from a guy on ebay for $1300, and after some water intrusion issues thought I got screwed. But...........new water pump, and impellar and finally getting her on the water I think she was well worth it. I choke it for a few seconds, fire her up, and pull to the bank and let her warm up for a few minutes. Lay the hammer down and away we go! When I pull onto the bank for some R&R I never have to choke her again!
